Hemorrhoid Energy Therapy, otherwise known as HET, is a procedure used to treat grades I and II hemorrhoids. The device is inserted into the anus and a low thermal energy is applied to shrink the hemorrhoids. The procedure is quick to perform, but sedation is often advised.
With HET, multiple treatments may be recommended to see symptomatic relief and there is typically a 90 day wait time between procedures because of the global billing period. While HET may be effective in treating some low grade hemorrhoids, clinical evidence is limited and the recurrence rate has been reported to be as high as 50% after a year. The cost per procedure is much higher than alternative procedures, with the exception of hemorrhoidectomy.
